Modern apiculture method in Niokolo-Koba Park
Since 2023, the Périer-D’Ieteren Foundation has been supporting the beekeeping industry in Senegal’s Niokolo-Koba Park, a World Heritage Biosphere Reserve. The project is supervised by ULB-Coopération and is part of Uni4Coop’s five-year program (2022-2026) in Senegal.
The apiculture sector, developed in the rural community of Linkéring on the edge of the park, focuses on production linked to honey processing, as well as training and apprenticeship. The reforestation of melliferous and forest plants is a positive factor, as the flora has a direct impact on beehive yields. Setting up such activities enables the local population to increase their livelihoods and bring in additional income.
