Set of eight sketches painted in 1649 by Erasmus II Quellin
The Périer-D’Ieteren Foundation has provided financial support for the restoration of a set of eight oil sketches on panels painted in 1649 by Erasmus II Quellin. These works illustrate episodes from the legendary war between the Torriani and Visconti families and were intended for tapestries woven in Brussels, which are currently conserved in Regensburg. The preservation of the preparatory sketches for the tapestries is exceptional, especially as the original cartoons have also been preserved. Although little is known about this collection because of its poor state of preservation, it will be showcased at the ‘Drafts’ exhibition organised by the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in October 2024. After restoration, the sketches will be displayed in the museum’s permanent galleries.
