Michel Sittow and Margaret of Austria – favourite artist, friend and possible spy ?
The painter Michel Sittow, trained in Bruges probably in the workshop of Hans Memling, was an important innovator of Early Modern portraiture and court artists travelling in Europe. His moves demonstrate the steady flow of communication between the sovereigns and patrons of the arts at the end of the fifteenth century and the early decades of the sixteenth century. This study by Oskar Rojewski aims to analyse the possible stay of the painter or his duties and tasks for the court of Margaret of Austria, investigating documents from the Archives générales du Royaume à Bruxelles (AGR).
